This phenomenon is actually triggered by upwelling which happens when nutrient rich cold water is brought to the surface by southerly winds. This allows for a rapid increase in dinoflagellates (a “bloom” of phytoplankton). This is a natural phenomenon and usually occurs in early autumn along our coastline. As you stroll along the beach at night you will find a blue-green glitter of light exploding underneath your feet and see waves that appear illuminated by magical lights in the ocean. This phenomenon is known as bioluminescence. During the day, you will notice reddish bands of discolouration of the water. In severe red tides, the negative consequences can be depletion of oxygen, death of certain fish due to extreme levels of organisms that clog the gills and emission of toxins from certain of the dinoflagellates. It is therefore advisable to not eat mussels, oysters, clams, bait or any filter-feeding shellfish caught during a red tide. The phenomenon will subside of its own accord and eventually disappear…until next season.
